Philip,

mod_wsgi is definitely the way to go now, but I think at the time of this post there wasn't a clearly defined "best way." The official Django docs were still suggesting Apace+mod_python for the app stack and a lighter server to serve out static content.

Just browsing around looking for Lighttpd deployment information. Just would like to point out to future readers that in my experience at least mod_wsgi provides far better performance than mod_python. It literally cut my memory consumption in half. Just something to think about.

I have to try using the proxy setup on the Lighttpd side. I've read many tutorials where Lighty on the front, like you do it, is preferred.

So far I've been running with Apache and mod_python in front and Lighty on the back to serve media. My Apache is currently serving a few PHP based sites and a couple of Django projects so maybe that makes more sense in my case.

I wrote an article on how to <a href="http://ventanazul.com/webzine/tutorials/setup-apache-lighttpd-django-ubuntu" rel="nofollow">setup Apache, mod_proxy and Lighttpd on Ubuntu</a>, you'll find more details about the process there.

Regards!

I can't thank you enough for posting this -it saved me a bunch of time. I am running lighttpd as my main server on port 80 virtual-hosting static files and some php sites, then apache handling one domain that is using django on another port. It seems like everyone else is doing it the other way!
Thank You!
